Is 5k+ Subscribers the Right Time to Contact Advertisers?

Would 5k+ subs be a good time to begin reaching out to advertisers directly?

Exactly! FWIW, on my personal newsletter (less than 100 subs ATM, but great open rates), I use the ad network. I'm not making my rent or anything, but I'm making some each send. As long as your rates work for the advertiser, I figure why not?

It's tricky to know what type of CPM rates to quote but I'll give it a go and see how it lands with advertisers

Yes agree. Go for it! I have a niche publication with 4K subs and have been getting some good traction with advertisers in my area.

I’m at 1500+ in a targeted niche and the readers / network asked for it… they rather see peers and relevant ads, than having to pay for the subscription. I’m switching over from paid memberships to classifieds and sponsorship for that reason.

One thing to add (maybe obvious) but a media kit is crucial to show that your audience is exactly the right fit, they engage with content, etc. So your open/click data, any facts you have from your welcome surveys or other polls, etc. That’s been a great aid for me to spark conversations and I think comforts advertisers as that is what they would get from larger players.
