Trying to get Garry Tan form YC to subscribe to my newsletter while defending Beehiiv as he criticizes unsolicited newsletters.. Not sure if this is hustle/persistence or wishful thinking.. or both. https://x.com/simplysparsh/status/1904206961127944248?s=46
the Shopify analogy is an interesting one but there wasn't the same flywheel that exists with boosts and cross-promo-- i.e one shitty dropshipping store didn't benefit from another shitty one signing up for Shopify. this sorta exists in Beehiiv -- i don't think BH is doing anything wrong (yet) by letting it play out so long as newsletters aren't breaking terms of service with their growth tactics-- see if these things wither and die eventually. but if the arb schemes keep multiplying, I do think it's an existential threat to those of us actually trying to write stuff for people to read
It just had a different way of flywheeling. An app called oberlo that would help people setup one click drop ship store. You click a button, oberlo shows aliexpress products, you choose some and instantly create the store.. So while it’s not the same like cross promo, it had its own multipliers . But yeah, I agree.. can’t keep up the bad rep for long.
yea I forgot about Oberlo -- my favorite was the era (2016-7ish?) where the major dropship apparel brands leaned into patriotic themes for dropship storefronts. order a jacket from "Good American" and it literally came with tags from the factory in Shenzhen or wherever and zero americana branding what a time to be alive
Haha yeah! Can’t say I am not guilty of cashing on some of that “free plus shipping” business model.. 😂
